The Connection Project
Indigenous Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (I-ASIST) & safeYARN
The Connection Project was founded out of a genuine concern for the well-being of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in our country. After years of working closely with these communities, it has become evident that our current western framework falls short in meeting their fundamental needs, especially the need for connection. Albert Einstein famously said, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
With this perspective in mind, it becomes clear that our current approach to addressing mental health crises and suicide rates in Australia is flawed and ineffective. The Connection Project Australia is dedicated to progress, actively challenging the status quo, and embracing a dynamic and adaptable approach to addressing mental health and suicide concerns within vulnerable communities.
I-ASIST
I-ASIST was co-created by the voices of 94 Indigenous communities and organisations across Australia by Indiegnous Professor Maree Toombs during her time at The University of Queensland.
I-ASIST was built on the already successful evidence based LivingWorks ASIST model that has 40 years of wisdom embedded into its model. I-ASIST is a culturally safe version of the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training that is tailored to the unique needs and experiences of Indigenous communities. This specialised training recognises the importance of incorporating traditional cultural teachings, values, and practices into suicide prevention efforts.
I-ASIST acknowledges the historical trauma and systemic barriers that Indigenous people face, and fosters cultural safety and sensitivity into its training By weaving together Indigenous knowledge and contemporary suicide prevention strategies, I-ASIST equips community members, service providers, and leaders with the skills and knowledge to recognise risks, provide immediate support, and develop culturally responsive approaches to suicide prevention within Indigenous communities.
SafeYARN
A suicide alertness training program providing individuals with the skills and knowledge to identify individuals who may be at risk of suicide and connect them to the appropriate resources and support. During the training session, participants learn how to recognise warning signs, engage in direct conversations, and facilitate access to professional help for individuals who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts.
safeTALK equips participants with the confidence and tools to be proactive in preventing suicide, ultimately contributing to a safer and more supportive community for everyone.
“I really enjoyed the Indigenous Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training. It was informative and is very relevant and useful, not only for the work I do but also In my personal life as well. Being an Indigenous man from Sydney, Suicide is very prevalent especially living in the city. The training that was presented to us was culturally safe, and I now have the skills and confidence to help out my community if anyone is feeling suicidal.”

“I found the training so valuable, both Eli and Chad were excellent and engaging facilitators. They brought such knowledge with clear instruction throughout the process, while supporting the vulnerability and lived experience of the participants in the room. I highly recommend this training, it has left me with confidence and the right tools to better support people in both my personal and professional life.”
